In a bid to nurture young talent and inspire future engineers, the IEEE Indonesia Section, in collaboration with the IEEE Student Branch Binus University, organized a Pre-University STEM Workshop on 14 May 2023. The workshop, held at the prestigious Binus ASO School of Engineering in Tangerang, was opened by the IEEE Region 10 Director Prof. Lance Fung, who was visiting the Indonesia Section. The workshop featured two speakers, namely, Mr. Auzi Asfarian (recipient of the 2023 IEEE Pre-University STEM Portal Grant Program) and Prof. Teddy Mantoro (Chair of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, Indonesia Chapter).

One of the highlights of the event was the opportunity to engage with the enthusiastic 8 teachers and 27 students from Fitrah Islamic World Academy, Bogor, who displayed a remarkable passion for engineering and entrepreneurship. The workshop aimed to guide pre-university students in charting their paths toward a successful engineering career, and understanding the use of artificial intelligence in pre-university education, while also fostering collaboration between educational institutions and IEEE and IEEE Student Branch activities.

Grateful for the opportunity and support, the organizers expressed their appreciation to several key figures, including Prof. Lance Fung (Director of IEEE Region 10), Prof. Gamantyo Hendrantoro and Dr. Agnes Irwanti  (Chairman and Vice Chairman of IEEE Indonesia Section), Dr. Nia Kurnianingsih (IEEE R10 Treasurer), Dr. Leo Hwa Chiang (Director of Singapore Ops IEEE Asia-Pacific Limited), and Dr. Suryadiputra Liawatimena and Dr. Nur Afny C. Andryan (Binus University), and IEEE Student Branch Binus University. Their warm welcome and assistance greatly contributed to the success of the event.

The Pre-University STEM Workshop on Planning Your Career in Engineering served as a testament to the commitment of the IEEE to fostering educational excellence, nurturing talent, and shaping the future of engineering in Indonesia. Through such initiatives, young minds are given the opportunity to explore their passions, expand their knowledge, and pursue fulfilling careers in the ever-evolving field of engineering. In his opening remarks, Prof. Lance Fung introduce the IEEE TryEngineering (https://tryengineering.org/) and IEEE REACH (https://reach.ieee.org/) which provides resources for both students and teachers to explore and learn about engineering from middle school or high school.

IEEE also provides the IEEE Pre-University STEM Portal Grant and IEEE STEM Champion to support IEEE organizational units or members to conduct STEM activities at the pre-university level. This year, the IEEE Indonesia Section IPB University Student Branch was awarded this grant to conduct Pre-University STEM in August for middle school and high school students in West Java.
