ABOUT US
The IEEE is a non-profit corporation, incorporated in the state of New York (US) on 16 March 1896. The purpose of the IEEE is to engage exclusively in scientific and educational activities within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended, directed toward the advancement of the theory and practice of electrical, electronics, communications and computer engineering, as well as computer science, the allied branches of engineering and the related arts and sciences, which benefit the engineering profession and the public.
As authorised by the IEEE Board of Directors, the IEEE Member and Geographic Activities Board (known as IEEE Regional Activities Board prior to 1 January 2008) approved the establishment and boundaries of the IEEE Indonesia Section on 16 February 1988. The Indonesia Section conducts activities which assist the local IEEE members to enhance their professional careers and their communities.
As a part of the IEEE, Indonesia Section shares the overall goals, vision and mission, and values adopted by the IEEE organization, both ethically and professionally. But as organization working in the territory of the Republic of Indonesia, Indonesia Section also has its own Articles of Association (Anggaran Dasar) in accordance with the Constitution and the laws of Indonesia.
Societies of the IEEE have their own representatives in the form of chapters, in which each chapter represents one or several societies.
At the end of year 1987, the late Mr. Mohammedan V. Chauchan, The Region 10 Director at that time came to Indonesia to meet all the IEEE members in Indonesia. The meeting was arranged by Dr. Joseph F. Luhukay, a researcher from Universitas Indonesia. From that meeting, a petition to form the IEEE Indonesia Section was made and signed by 32 members who were present with interim chair, Dr. Joseph F. Luhukay.
By February 1988, the good news arrived to Indonesia, the petition was granted and the first meeting was held and directly voted for the chairman of the IEEE Indonesia Section officially as follows:
Chairman: Ir. Soekarno Abdulrahman (the late)
Secretary: Ir. Arnold Ph. Djiwatampu
Treasurer: Ir. Setyo Hari Wijanto, MBA
Student members Development: Dr. Ir. Wahidin Wahab, MSc.
At that time, The IEEE Indonesia Section was officially registered to the department of internal affairs of Republic of Indonesia as a legal scientific and research organization in Indonesia with the its Headquarter located in Jakarta. The chair, Mr. Soekarno, was the director of the Directorate General of the Telecommunication of Indonesia, while Mr. Arnold was his staff. Both of them had supported all section activities and provided funding for the section social meeting. The IEEE Indonesia Section owed to both of them for their support to the initial activities in the section.
The chairmanship was carried over to the next year until end of 1989. The second executive committee was formed by election as follows:
Chairman: Ir. Djauhari (the late)
secretary: Dr. Ir. Wahidin Wahab, MSc.
Treasurer: Ir. Setyo Hari Wijanto, MBA
Membership Development: Dr. Ir. Wahidin Wahab, MSc.
In 1990, the Region 10 Annual meeting was held in Bali and by the support by Mr. M.V.Chauchan (the late), as the R10 Director, two collaborations with local society were signed. The collaboration between the IEEE Indonesia Section with the Indonesia Institute of Electrical Engineers (BKL-PII) and with the society of Telecommunication of Indonesia (MASTEL=Masyarakat Telekomunikasi). During this period, the IEEE Indonesia Section newsletter was published, funded by a local publisher which was owned by an IEEE member. There were also more technical activities done for the society and the membership increased to around 320 members.

In 1995, the first International conference was organized by the Indonesia Section, at the Hotel Horison at Jakarta Oceanfront City, Ancol Beach Park, Taman Impian Jaya in Jakarta, 140 papers were contributed from international scientific communities, and also by several Large Satellite Communiction Company such as Loral Space System USA, Motorolla Inc., PT. Indosat(Indonesia), AsiaSat, Hughes Network Systems(USA),etc. the conference was successful and became the first milestone for the activity in the section.
and since then the IEEE Indonesia Section started the Asia Pasific Satellite Communication (APSATCOM) conference every year, namely in 1996, 1998 and 1999, but due to the lack of local support the conference was terminated. However since 2012 until today, Indonesia has founded two conferences namely The IEEE International Conference on Communication, Networks and Satellite (COMNETSAT) and IEEE International Conference on Cybernetics and Computational Intelligence (CYBERNETICSCOM)
